SnO2hollow microspheres are synthesized through facile one-pot solution phase method by using SnCl4center dot 5H2O as precursor. The shell thickness of the microsphere is about 110 nm. The spherical morphology is stable enough to survive long ultrasonication treatment. Time-dependent growth experiments are conducted to reveal the morphology evolution of SnO2microspheres. It is found that the presence of methenamine is essential to the formation of SnO2hollow microspheres from a self-assembly of nanoparticles. One possible formation mechanism of the SnO2hollow microspheres is proposed based on the Ostwald ripening mechanism. The as-synthesized SnO2microspheres exhibit a good gas response to alcohol vapor, demonstrating their potential application as gas sensor.
